The result was a win to the home team with Tobermory retaining the trophy. A good win for Tobermory but better still great company, good craic and superb catering from Catherine Anne. Looking forward to next years thrilling installment.

Tobermory Open Weekend

4th-5th August 2012

For the first time there was a early-early draw to accommodate wedding guests who required to be finished early, and there was no surprise that some of the early starters benefitted from the flat calm conditions- assuming they put on plenty of midge protection. Brown brothers David, Paul and Graham came in separated by one stroke with a lead on scratch that lasted until the later players came in. Ross Kirsop staked an early claim to the handicap trophy with a very tidy nett 60.

By the end of day one as calm conditions gave way to a cooling breeze, an intriguing contest had developed and Sunday saw several players in contention for the trophies on offer. In the end Paul Brown's two very tidy rounds were enough to see off the competition for the Willie McAllister Trophy.

In the MacBrayne Cup, Ewan MacCrone defended a two shot lead over Graham Davidson until the latter stages, when his bogey on 17 against Graham's birdie saw the lead change hands for the first time, with Graham going on to claim his ninth Open title after 36 hard-fought holes.

The best 18 on handicap was won by Ross Kirsop, whose first-day 60 was not sufficient for him to hold off the challenge by Paul Brown. This was the first time for over three years that no official sponsor was available for the trophies on offer. Any reader with ideas of a potential sponsor for this high profile event is invited to let the club know through the usual channels.

Group picture shows some of the golfers who took part and seated are L-R Paul Brown winner of the Willie MacAllister Trophy for Handicap, John Wilshire Captain, Graham Davidson with the MacBrayne Cup for Scratch.

Also showing is Graham Davidson with the MacBrayne Cup for Scratch, this being the 9th time Graham has won this.

Clydesdale Bank Trophy

28th July 2012

After last year's “War on the Shore” when Craignure GC thrashed Tobermory 5½-½, Tobermory exacted revenge with a comprehensive 4-0 going-over of our island rivals. Not one of the matches went beyond the 15th green, and the traditional bottle of drams donated by the Clydesdale bank was enjoyed rather more by the home side than the away team.

Competition Starts- July 2nd July 2012

As an experiment to assess demand, the Sunday competitions in July will make provision for an early start and a late start.

The early draw will take place 1t 10:15 for a 10:30 tee-off. The start sheet will be posted as usual on the club noticeboard and anyone who puts their name down will be intitles to enter the main draw as before if for any reason they cannot be there at the earlier time, but for fairness no entries will be allowed after 17:00 on the Saturday.

The late start will be by prior arrangement only, names placed on the start sheet no later than 17:00 on Saturday. The club will have no responsibilty for providing a partner or marker for anyone entering the late draw, which will entitle players to commence play between 16:00 and 17:00

During July there will be no 12:15 draw and all players not involved in the late or early draws will be placed in the main draw for a 13:00 tee-off.

Start sheets will be posted each Sunday for the following week. .

  10th June 2012

Over the weekend, Tobermory hosted their annual match v Vaul GC, encompassing the Western Approaches Trophy for individuals on Saturday and the Team Fourballs on Sunday. The individual event was played in good sunny conditions with Peter MacCrone coming out as winner with a very respectable 39pts losing another shot off his handicap in the process.

Sunday brought the long overdue rain though still very warm. Waterproofs and Brollies were out in force but did not dampen the spirits with some fine golf being played. Tobermory managed to regain the Cadden Cup by a score of 5 to 1. Once again a weekend to remember with social activities being high on the agenda and good spirits in abundance.

  May 2012

Wednesday 30th May - The Ladies Flag(Tombstone format) competition was won by Kathy McAdam, but it was a thrilling finish with three ladies on the last green, a tape measure was needed to confirm Kathy McAdam's win by 27 centimetres, from Olive Brown and Doris Hargreaves.

A lovely day was had by all.

What wonderful weather on Mull for Tobermory Golf Club Ladies Open Day held on Saturday May 19th.
Alison Baxter from Swanston Golf Club in Edinburgh was the winner but all the ladies had good scores and enjoyed the day, everyone is looking forward to next year!

April 2012

Well, April saw the return of Andrew McHaffie to the club and after playing enough games to get his handicap back, he played in his first competitive match. Sadly for the rest of us, he also decided to waltz off with the honours, picking up the Jimmy Reid Memorial trophy which was played in bright sunshine even though it was a bit on the cold side. Always a popular competition, this tombstone format saw Andrew finish in the hole on the 18th being the only player to go the distance.

Picture shows left to right Jimmy Reid's Daughter Liz presenting the trophy to Andrew McHaffie along with Captain John Wilshire.

March 2012

At the end of a wet and wild winter, the last week of march was blessed with glorious sunshine. This gave the Tobermory Ladies the joy of finishing their winter competitions in excellent conditions.

The winners shown here are Doris Hargreaves who won the Eclectic and Olive Brown the 9-hole Stableford final.

September 2011

It was a busy weekend for Tobermory golfers with members taking part in Opens as far away as Falkirk and Campbeltown as well as closer to home at Craignure, where Paul MacKinnon was successful on Saturday (3rd), and on Sunday looking to qualify for next weeks Medal Finals through the September Medal.

There was a field of 23 and Graham Davidson was a putt away from equalling the course record as he shot 65 (net 58) to win from Peter MacCrone who scored 73 (net 59). In the process he clipped two shots from his eclectic score for the season to whisk the Brockville Quaich out of Donald Brown's hands. Donald had led this and the Order of Merit going into this last day, but it was a double whammy as he saw Ewan MacCrone leapfrog him to claim the Order of Merit Trophy.

Pictured are Graham Davidson (r) and Ewan MacCrone.

Glencruitten v Tobermory
21st August 2011

On Sunday the return leg of the Old Mull Shield match between Glencruitten and Tobermory Golf Club took place at Oban, and the home side were tackling a 3 point deficit from the first match. However Tobermory produced their best set of results ever away from home, and won 5-1 on the day (9½ - 2½ on aggregate). Oban were as always gracious in defeat, but are no doubt desperate to turn the tables next year against their island opponents.

20th August 2011

The annual Lions Tournament for Gents Ladies and Juniors took place on Saturday, and a strong breeze made conditions difficult for the field. Club Captain Graham Brown was able to navigate his way to 41 pts, while Ladies Captain Olive Brown scored 28 for her win. Lewis Wilshire won the junior trophy with 40 pts as he continued his comeback from a broken arm earlier in the season.

The winners are pictured here with Lions President Ian Smith who presented the prizes.

Summer 2011

The Junior summer challenge trophy was the idea of Greenkeeper John Wilshire who spotted a gap in the fixture list during the summer holidays. The format of best 4 rounds out of 6 allowed the boys to play competitvely and still not miss out when away on holiday.

The four Junior boys of Ross and William MacCrone,Lewis Brown and Lewis Wilshire had some really great rounds during the summer and eventually Lewis Wilshire came out on top to win the 1st Junior Summer Challenge trophy The magnificent Trophy was presented by John Wilshire and Lewis received the Trophy on Lions Day.

5th June 2011

In an eventful weekend, Tobermory travelled to Tiree for their annual match v Vaul GC, encompassing the Western Approaches Trophy for individuals on Saturday and the Team Fourballs on Sunday. The individual event featured some fantastic scoring, with first-time visitor Jamie Cowe returning a card of 42 stableford points only to find that both Ian Brown and Gordon Chalmers had scored an impressive 43, Ian winning the trophy on countback. On the Sunday Vaul managed to reclaim the Cadden Cup after a four year wait, by a score of 3½ to 2½. Full scores are below. There were good performances on both sides, but none gutsier than that by veteran Bill Clegg who stepped into the breach to replace an injured colleague, and was almost able to gain something out of a tough match against Neil Connor and Cameron Kennedy, only losing out on the 17th along with partner Gordon Chalmers.

Meanwhile in Tobermory, youngster William MacCrone came within a stroke of equalling the course junior record with a superb 65 in the June Medal and bringing his handicap down to single figures.

On Saturday 14th May Tobermory played hosts to Taynuilt in their annual fixture, but the home club's hospitality extended only as far as supplying food and drink for the visitors as the golf ended with a 5-1 victory for the islanders. No less than four of the six matches went to the last green, but home advantage proved to be decisive with Taynuilt being unable to record a win in any of them.

Tobermory Golf Club's Opening Fours tournament in support of the British Heart Foundation took place in pleasant spring-like conditions  on Sunday 27th March. Two trophies were contested; Jim Laverty Trophy for Gents playing with Ladies or Juniors, and "Hairy-Legs" Trophy for Gents pairs. Scoring was competitive and Ross MacCrone completed a hat-trick of wins in the J Laverty along with Iain Wilshire, Club Vice-Captain. John Wilshire won the "Hairy-Legs" with partner John Weir. The two pairs are pictured outside the clubhouse.

The winter prizegiving provided a third Wilshire, young Lewis with the new prize for junior winter champion, whilst evergreen Dodo MacLean won the gents equivalent.

Tobermory Golf Club Juniors had their annual prizegiving last Friday(19th November) at MacDonald Arms Hotel. Junior Convener John Weir (top left) is pictured with some of his proteges, including William MacCrone (centre), club junior champion, and Lewis Wilshire (centre-left), who holed in one at the club championship in August.

The annual prizegiving at Tobermory Golf Club took place in the clubhouse on Saturday 13th November. Attended by most of the season's winners, the prizes were well spread amongst the many players who contributed to the club's successful year. Pictured are the winners including club champion Graham Davidson who completed a hat-trick of back-to-back victories, and Margaret Ingram who in a remarkable summer lifted all six ladies monthly medals as well as the ladies championship.

Mishnish Invitational

Thursday 28th October saw the third annual Invitational Tournament sponsored by the Mishnish Hotel, Belhaven Brewery, Wallace's Express and Northern Marine Management, and although poor weather restricted play to 9 holes there was a good turnout. Although the social element was not forgotten, there was keen competition for the many fabulous prizes on offer.

Home player Mike Campbell showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels with an impressive 20 Stableford Points. Some of the competitors are pictured with sponsors below after the prizegiving held at the Mishnish in the evening where they were treated to the best wines and ales and a fantastic seafood buffet provided by Mishdish, Mull's newest seafood restaurant

Margaret Ingram (Midge) won all six monthly medals and the Medal Final, then completed her most successful season by winning the Ladies Stableford Final.

Vice Captain's Prize
29th August 2010

A blustery day saw the field compete against both course and elements. The format was "Tombstone" , and the object was to get as far round the course with the par plus the individual player's handicap giving the total number of shots which could be played. Early leader Ian McNaughton managed a putt on the last green, and then watched as his competitors fell by the wayside on their way home. Graham Davidson played well in the conditions but his short 6 handicap was insufficient to get him to the eighteenth. Vice Captain Ian Wilshire thanked those who braved the autumnal breezes as he awarded the trophy to "Chaz" who can congratulate himself on continuing his recent fine run of form.

22nd August 2010

This was the most closely contested match between these old rivals for some time, with Tobermory recording their best result ever in Oban. Highlights included a dramatic comeback by Dodo MacLean and Ian McNaughton from 3 holes down at one stage to record a 1-hole victory. The overall match result ends with Tobermory retaining the Old Mull Shield by 7½ - 4½ .
