2nd April 2006 |
On Sunday 2nd April, the Gents regular season got under way with the April Medal. A bright if somewhat blustery day saw 11 entrants shake off their ring-rustiness with the first full eighteen for some six months. The course was a credit to greenkeeper John Wilshire, and it speaks volumes for his work and the efforts of ad hoc helpers that the course was fit this early for the April Medal to double as the first round of the club Centenary Trophy (effectively the club championship).
Peter MacCrone recovered from a lost ball at the first to record a nett 66, sufficient to hold off Eoghann MacLean. The chase for trophies begins again...
SSS 64 CSS 66
1. P. MacCrone (17) 83-17= 66
2. E. MacLean (14) 81-14= 67
3. G. Chalmers (12) 81-12= 69 |

The hardy souls who set out in waterproofs could well have applied suntan lotion for their second nine. Catherine Ann MacCrone held on to the ladies' trophy for the third consecutive year. Ladies Captain Jenny Smith was some way off the pace in second.
Eoghann MacLean refused to let the wind blow him off course as he carded a decent 32 stableford points to hold off Graham Davidson in the gents section.

Gordon and Ewan turned up almost expecting the freedom of the course, but were delighted to find that this annual matchplay tournament had attracted the largest turnout (so far) this season.
"The best and purest form of golf..." declared John Weir afterwards... so nothing to do with the result then, John? With the match poised at one and a half matches apiece, the C and VC were pivotal in determining the outcome, and...yup, the VC and partner Iain Smithson brought home the winning point on the last green despite being 5 up after 8 holes.
Words and pictures by GC !!!! So... no bitterness there then?! |

23rd April 2006 |
The anniversary of Shakespeare's birth and death, when Phil Higson became poetry in motion...Cervantes was born this day, and some of the field were merely tilting at windmills in the wake of old goldenboy himself. St George's Day, and .... that's enough of this!
Gordon was unable to play today, but thanked the field for supporting his competition when he awarded the trophy to Phil. The course continues to improve as it receives some warmth at long last, and the greens were showing the signs of benefitting from being hollow-tined and top-dressed by GK John Wilshire and his band of volunteers last week.

30th April 2006 |
A very decent spring day, and another decent turnout. 17 cards were returned...some of them a trifle reluctantly! Donald "Mickey" Brown had a good day at the office with an impressive 38 points which saw his handicap reduced to 8.
Alasdair MacLeod saw off Mike Campbell on countback to grab second place on 36 points. Catherine-Anne MacCrone retained her trophy from last year.
