6th May 2006 |
Oban Golf Club's junior team came to Tobermory on Saturday with a healthy lead from last autumn's first leg, and although Tobermory fared better this time, it was insufficient to prevent the Oban boys from lifting the quaich by a 9-3 margin.
On a beautiful day there was some good scoring, with Michael Fraser carding a superb 1-under-par 67 on his FIRST round on this difficult course. |

14th May 2006 |
The May Medal (doubling as the second round of the Club Championship) and Peter MacCrone shows no signs of letting up on a relentless seam of form which would no doubt have given food for thought to his rivals in both the scratch and handicap sections.
It was a good day for scoring, but still perhaps a bit early in the calendar for course and players to be at their best. Nonetheless veterans John Weir and Gordon Chalmers are hanging around in the handicap, and Graham Davidson, Scott MacLean and Mickey Brown are showing an interest in the scratch competition.

| Taynuilt GC v Tobermory |
20th May 2006 |
Gordon Chalmers made history by becoming the first Captain to lose to Taynuilt. The fact that this was his first match in charge, and also the first time this fixture had been played did nothing to stop calls for his immediate resignation. But he stood resolute by his conviction that he could make Tob GC a force in world golf over the next two years.
In the real world, a thoroughly enjoyable match was played out in good spirit by both teams. Eoghann MacLean and John S MacPhail managed a halved match, no mean achievement on a strange course against good opposition. Captain Insensible had a comfortable win over home skipper Charles Scott, but had to give due credit to partner John Anderson, seconded to him by the home club, and eager to show his credentials as a first pick for Taynuilt next time out.
The other matches went in favour of the home side as local knowledge tilted the match in Taynuilt's direction.
Final score Taynuilt 4 ½ Tobermory 1 ½ |

| The Jimmy Reid Trophy |
21st May 2006 |
Peter MacCrone again showed the opposition a clean pair of heels in this competition dedicated to the memory of the late Vice-President. Taking the form of a "tombstone tournament", where every player gets to play 64 strokes (the par) plus their handicap, and then marks where their last shot finished, Peter was the only player to get a shot at the last.
Playing partners for the day Donald Brown and John Weir were second and third respectively, finishing on the 17th green. In fact if Peter and Donald hadn't got their balls mixed up on 15, (no laughing at the back!) with resultant 2-stroke penalties, there is every chance Peter could have gone on to finish the course, which is a rare occurrence in this type of event. |

| 3rd Round Centenary Trophy |
28th May 2006 |
The leaderboard says it all about this day. Three on 66 with a clutch of players hard on their heels, each ruing the many shots they left on the course particularly at the 8th /17th which seemed to play like a par 6 all day! In the end it took countback to separate Gordon, John and Dodo.
Good scoring in difficult conditions, a cigarette paper between 1/2/3, but watch this space in two weeks when Paul Brown gets a third counting round, and Peter MacCrone replaces today's 93 with something more like his normal score in the handicap section
Graham Davidson looks a shoo-in for the Championship, but will take nothing for granted and be giving all in his efforts to land the big one.
