| June Medal / 4th Round Centenary |
11th June 2006 |
If there were ever any doubts about the destination of the club championships, then Peter MacCrone thought he might fuel them with as shaky a start as you could imagine for someone whose trophy cabinet will no doubt need and extension at the end of this fine season.
|
In the scratch section Graham Davidson started the day with a 11-stroke lead which looked unlikely to be overcome, and helped himself to a leisurely 76 (net 70) in warm Tobermory sunshine, to deservedly win the Centenary Trophy for the 5th time. No-one made any significant inroads into this indomitable lead, but it should be noted that Paul Brown leapfrogged G Chalmers and cousin Donald Brown to take second scratch. |
Graham is delighted to receive his well-deserved Championship Trophy........ |
In the handicap section, an outward 43 by Peter MacCrone didn't look too clever, but a fine inward 35 saw him rightly take the handicap trophy, and no-one could have any doubt he is a worthy winner, holding off Paul Brown (who won the medal with a great net 63) by 2 strokes.

| Alisdair Brown Trophy |
17th June 2006 |
This was the 5th Order of Merit Competition on the Tobermory calendar, and on a Saturday evening ten very dogged souls set out on the filthiest June night you could imagine; a real highland smirr driven by a gusting southwesterly wind made waterproofs and umbrellas virtually redundant. Ally MacLeod set a very decent early mark which no-one was subsequently to overhaul. 17 Stableford points out, followed by 23 in..the man must have leather skin and webbed feet!!!

| Tobermory v Glencruitten GC |
18th June 2006 |
Captain Gordon Chalmers' third team match was played under much the same conditions as the previous evening's club tournament, with visibility at times down to less than 150 yards. Paradoxically, Tobermory's historical home advantage in this fixture seemed to disappear in the mist, as the Oban boys dug in and took 2 points from a fixture that has never been kind to them, setting themselves up well for the return leg on 27th August. |

| Argyll & Bute Team Championship |
24th June 2006 |
Team Tobermory gain a creditable 2nd place
The Area Team Championship took place in unseasonably good midsummer weather at Lochgilphead, and Phil Higson played the round of his life to put Team Tob in contention. Having gone out to 16 earlier in the month, Phil knew he had something to prove to himself as well as his team-mates, and his round here (on a course he had played only once in his life) laid to rest any nagging doubts he may have had. 7 over par 71 (nett 55) was far and away the best score to handicap on the day, and in fact only one player beat that off scratch.
Graham Davidson was always there or thereabouts with a 71 nett 66. Gordon Chalmers struggled after a poor start but ploughed on after a disastrous 8 on the par 3 ninth hole to bring in an 84 nett 72. Mike Campbell's nett 78 was decisive in giving Tobermory second place as a tie-breaker. |

| Fort Augustus v Tobermory GC |
25th June 2006 |
Two years ago this fixture ended up 6-0 to Fort Augustus.could Tobermory fare better this time? Well, things started badly inasmuch as work and family commitments had reduce the travelling party from Tobermory to 8, 2 matches short of the normal contingent.
However there was no question of a whitewash this time as Phil Higson and Brian MacRae, as well as Seve MacKinnon and Mike Campbell saw their matches off with a couple of holes in hand. Graham Davidson and Chris Russell went down, as did Gordon Chalmers and John Weir. Overall the match may have been drawn (or even won) had we taken a full team of 12, but it would be curmudgeonly to deny the Fort their third win in this, the seventh match in the history of this competition.
At the end of the day, the fact this match takes place at all is more important than the result, and it is to be hoped it continues for many a year. Our thanks go to our highland hosts for another superb weekend.

| The Western Isles Challenge Cup |
28th June 2006 |
A good steady performance from Chris Russell saw him lift this Stableford from under the noses of Dodo and Cath-Anne. Last year's winner John Weir was looking good until 17, when he mysteriously blew up (almost).
