September Medal 3rd September 2006

You couldn't make it up....after a long season, in the last chance saloon for qualification for the President's Cup next week, no less than four players tied for the lead to claim a place in next weeks showcase event.

A record-breaking 9 players will line up for this tournament, while a team of lawyers assisted by Carol Vorderman worked out the places in the Tobermory Trophy. In rain and wind, all the players had reason to regret missed chances, but eventually Ewan MacCrone was to win on bih from Graham Davidson, Ian McNaughton, and Gordon Chalmers in fourth.

President's Cup 10th September 2006

The President's Cup was played out by no less than nine competitors this year, and while for the longest time it seemed that the player who held out best against a fairly stiff breeze would triumph, it fell finally to Graham Davidson, as on so many occasions, to step up to the crease and claim the trophy from John Weir and Chris Russell.

Graham played the last 6 in 1 under the card to record another fine victory. He is pictured receiving the trophy from Club President Bill Clegg (Below Right)

Tobermory Trophy 10th September 2006

Meanwhile the re-instated Tobermory Trophy (which used to be the second-class championship prize) was won by four shots when Mike Campbell carded a decent net 67.

The popular Mike was heartily praised by club skipper Gordon Chalmers after a season where he has made an impression both on the golf course and the committee (as Social Organiser). Well done to both, and indeed all who have kept the spirit of competition alive and well in TGC this year.

And then we were done....

Some i's have to be dotted and some t's crossed before the season finally draws to a close, but the curtain IS coming down now.

Donald Brown Snr won the Navy Cup by 2&1 against regular fours partner John Wilshire. John, who deserves huge credit for keeping our course in superb condition throughout the summer months, especially given the scant resources at his disposal, endured further heartbreak when he lost the " wee MacBrayne " final to Big Mike Campbell in the same week. Standing on the 18th tied on strokes and with a bih, John only had to match MC to lift the trophy, but having scrambled a 4 could only watch as Mike holed a 12-footer for a winning par 3.

In the final postscript to the regular season Ewan MacCrone won the Jubilee Cup with an impressive 38 Stableford points, Alasdair MacLeod defeated John MacPhail in the final of the Navy Cup Plate , and Graham Davidson retained his Brockville Quaich , albeit on a shared basis with Scott MacLean.

Captain Gordon won nothing outright on his own, but still managed to retain the Order of Merit Trophy. Here's to next summer season, for those who last the winter.
