March Update 2

Sunday 1st April marked the end of a busy opening to Tobermory's summer season, with three pieces of silverware and a medal decided in just 8 days.

Firstly the Opening Fours saw young Grant Williams and partner Tim Gardiner carry off the Jim Laverty Trophy for Ladies and Juniors partnered by a Gent.
The Gents prize was carried off by club captain Gordon Chalmers and greenkeeper John Wilshire.

The smile was wiped off Gordon's face six days later when the annual Captain v Vice Captain match was won at a canter by VC Graham Davidson.

March Update

It was a breezy afternoon when the players set out to find that last qualifying place for the next weekend's winter final. To their credit, Mike Campbell and Ian McNaughton turned out despite having already qualified.

Gordon Chalmers set a decent pace after an indifferent start (6 over after 3 holes) returning an eventual 42 net 35.5, only to be pipped by Graham Davidson whose 38 net 34.5 included birdies on 5 and 8 which were both playing extremely difficult in strong shifting winds. John Wilshire was third on the same score as Gordon, missing second place on countback.

Thus Graham joined Peter MacCrone, Ian McNaughton, Mike Campbell, and Donald Brown in the Final on Sunday. John Weir, who also qualified, misses out due to official Argyll and Bute Golf Union duties.

As it turned out, only three players were able to play in the medal final, in pretty uncomfortable conditions. Ian McNaughton got his hands on the Trophy with a superb net 28, leaving Graham Davidson in his wake and Mike Campbell a bit further back, unable to recover from yet another poor start.

The winter fours are still to be finished ahead of the summer season start on the 25th, just where did the winter go?

Febuary Update

February has proved to be a decent month for golf weatherwise. Who said climate change was a bad thing? Donald Brown carried off the February Medal and claimed his place in next months Winter Final with a 34 net 29.5 that could have been better but for a disappointing last hole.

There was a healthy turnout for the first (potential) 18-hole competition of the year when 10 members turned out for a tombstone tournament on the 18th. It was positively Spring-like, with the course bathed in warm sunshine all day. In fact the only person to complete 18 was Ian McNaughton, whose last shot saw him into the cup, the rest of the field having "died" over the preceding three holes.

January Update

It seems an age now since the last update, but in truth there’s been little to report on until the last couple of weeks. December’s weather was so horrendous that it took until the 17 th to get any fixtures played, although some of the boys managed a fours match or two.

So the Turkey shoot and the December medal became the same tournament. Mike Campbell had the lowest handicap score so qualifies for the medal final, while Graham Davidson won scratch and these two bagged the turkeys for the Christmas table.

The January Medal surprisingly got played on the date it was meant to. The course was very soggy, but the greens were dry-ish, and showing much better durability due to ongoing work by the GK and helpers. John Weir won by a shot from Gordon Chalmers, with Phil Higson a half-shot further back. All three, playing in the same group, broke their handicaps.

The Club AGM took place on Wednesday 17 th January with Olive Brown in the chair deputising for President Bill Clegg as he recovers from ill-health. Business was transacted quite smoothly for one of these affairs, and a new committee was elected for 2007. Unfortunately work commitments forced Ewan MacCrone and Eoghain MacLean to step down. Graham Davidson agreed to be Vice Captain and Peter MacCrone was elected to bring up a full complement. (New Committee)

The One Club Competition

The 1-club tourney on New Years Day was also won by big Graham, with John Weir close behind (Ooh er, missus!).
